THE ASSEMBLY

No subject is out of bounds; no question is off the table. In “THE ASSEMBLY,” anything can happen.

The show will follow a group of autistic student journalists as they prepare to interview six of the nation's biggest names, including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese

All have very different personalities, but one thing in common is a disarming naturalness full of truth, creating an atmosphere of authenticity that viewers can truly connect with!

Through surprising, unpredictable, sometimes funny or poignant questions, viewers discover celebrities as they have never seen them before!

Faced with these very special interviewers, the guests naturally drop the masks, and each meeting becomes a magical moment, out of time, filled with emotion, laughter, poetry and impertinence.

Leigh Sales, one of Australia's top interviewers, will mentor and prepare the journalists to learn their craft - how they research the week's interviewee and work through the spin to reveal the person behind the public persona. “THE ASSEMBLY is as honest and authentic as it gets”, said Sales.

All the students are undertaking a specifically designed journalism course delivered by Macquarie University, the first of its kind in Australia. The show is being made with the strong support and backing of Aspect, Australia's largest service for people on the autism spectrum, and Bus Stop Films, an Australian social enterprise supporting people with disabilities in filmmaking.

Helium is producing for the ABC with production funding from Screen NSW. Melissa Maclean is the showrunner and executive producer alongside Mark Fennessy, Therese Hegarty and ABC Commissioning Editor for Factual TV Julie Hanna.
